Canson Edition Etching

In July of 2008, Canson and Arches debuted a new line of museum quality fine art papers under the brand name Canson Infinity. Canson and Arches are part of a historically significant French based printing company. They created their first products just a few years after the invention of the first printing press, and have been providing consumers with fine art papers ever since. The papers in the new Canson Infinity line are crafted with the same materials of their traditional papers that have been used world wide for hundreds of years. However, the products under the innovative Canson Infinity brand have been updated for use with inkjet printers.
Canson Infinity characterizes their new line of products based on surface texture. The different surfaces range from smooth, ultra smooth, textured and canvas. The Edition Etching Rag 310 finds its place among the other smooth surfaced products. The smooth surface and slight grain in the Edition Etching Rag 310 bring out the details and sharpness in prints. The Edition Etching Rag’s texture, as well as its depiction of sharpness and detail, lends it especially well to photography. Its full color spectrum and ability to represent very deep blacks make it suitable for both color prints as well as black and white.
Like most other products in the Canson Infinity line, the Edition Etching Rag 310 contains an acid-free resin coating. The resin coating is the primary element that allows the Edition Etching Rag 310, as well as the other Canson Infinity products, to be used in inkjet printers. The resin coating also provides waterproof protection for the paper and its prints. In regards to ink, the Canson Edition Etching Rag 310 is suitable for use with both dye inks as well as pigmented inks. Upon printing, Canson states that the Edition Etching Rag 310 dries instantly.
The Canson Edition Etching 310 is a heavyweight paper at 310 grams per square meter. Like traditional rag papers, the Canson Edition Etching Rag 310 is made from 100% cotton. Cotton fibers are longer and stronger than wood fibers thus increasing the durability of the product. Additionally, cotton is ph neutral. The Canson Edition Etching Rag 310 is completely acid free. This lack of acid permits a longer life for works printed on the Edition Etching Rag. Acid free papers do not deteriorate over time, unlike many papers containing an acid.
In regards to coloring and tone, the Edition Etching Rag 310 is a bright and pure white. However, the Edition Etching Rag 310 achieves its whiteness through natural whitening means, not optical brightening agents.
Canson Infinity created the products in this line without the use of OBAs. Over the years, OBAs have been added to many art papers to create the appearance of extra brightness and whiteness. The OBAs coat the paper and work by absorbing ultraviolet and violet light. They then re-emit the light as blue, removing any yellow from the image. As a finished result, an OBA treated paper appears to have greater levels of whiteness than non-OBA treated papers and art works printed on OBA treated papers initially appear brighter. However, OBAs lose their fluorescent quality over time, leading to fading and yellowing of the paper. In contrast, the natural white pigments used in the Canson Edition Etching Rag 310 retain their whiteness, allowing the papers and prints to remain true to their original coloring for years to come.

While visiting photography forums, I noticed that photographers who were hesitant and pessimistic about switching from Hahnemuhle Photo Rag to Crane Museo Silver Rag found themselves surprised. Museo Silver Rag, a paper that some were expecting to bring them disappointment instead brought them joy.
Museo Silver Rag’s Smoothness
Museo Silver Rag has the feel and texture of fine cotton paper. The feel of the paper could be described as lush and exceptional. The creators of the paper were aiming for the feel of fiber-based silver gelatin prints. Museo Silver Rag is smooth 100% cotton paper without the shine. Although Museo Silver Rag has no shine, it provides a semi-gloss finish for photographs. The surface can be described as a bit pebbly, which also adds to the gloss due to light reflection. The Museo Silver Rag is 300 gsm and although the paper has a shine to it, it isn’t as smooth as the shine makes it appear.
A Few Concerns
Despite the ravers of the Crane and Co. paper, there were those who had problems with Museo Silver Rag. The problems? The complaint was that Museo Silver Rag was lacking the look and feel of dark room paper. There were also complaints of defects in the form of small problem spots. These problem spots looked like small round splatters that held slightly more texture. There were also a number of photographers that felt the paper’s texture was in fact a bit grainy, with an uneven fiber base.
Typically there are printing compatibility issues with new digital papers. If you are finding that the Museo Silver Rag isn’t meeting your expectations, pairing the paper with an Epson 3800 printer might just do the trick. Due to the thickness of the paper the Epson works better. HP Printer users ended up needing to hand-feed the printer due to the paper’s thickness.
The Price You Pay
Museo Silver Rag is definitely not the cheapest paper on the market. When it comes to a paper that has beautiful texture and depth, those who are paying the cost definitely feel like they are getting their money’s worth. Photographers who want to ditch a resin-coated paper for a fiber-coat are more than willing to pay

Museo Silver Rag paper is a toasty cream color that produces warm prints. The lack of optical brighteners is what gives the paper its yellow hue which has a more natural white than other papers. Museo Silver Rag is OBA free and that doesn’t affect the performance of the paper.
When photographers switched from black-and-white prints to color with Museo Silver Rag they discovered that the images still appeared to ‘pop’. The two things that image makers and photographers were impressed with was the depth and incredible detail that was achieved from printing on Museo Silver Rag . Although some photographers were impressed with the three dimensional feel the colors gave, most agreed that the paper is best used for black and white images. The rich black hues that the Museo Silver Rag produces are quite impressive, but for those who want a ‘wet darkroom look’ the Innova Fibaprint (f-type) is recommended.
Whether you want to see your original image come alive, restore an old photo, or simply do a fine art or photographic reproduction, Innova FibaPrint F-Type White Semi-Matte is a paper that can handle the job. The Surface of Innova FibaPrint F-Type White Semi-Matte
Innova FibaPrint F-Type White Semi-Matte has a very smooth surface. So smooth it might remind you of a fresh shave. It feels pretty close to top quality Forte darkroom paper that requires air-drying. The Innova FibaPrint F-Type White Semi-Matte is not as thick as some of its competition. The thickness does vary but the preferred weight is the 300gsm which gives it some weight but without making it feel too heavy. One photographer felt that the paper felt fairly heavy to only have a weight of 300 gsm.
Innova FibaPrint F-Type White Semi-Matte was engineered to to emulate the semi-matte finish of traditional papers. It has a fibre base that has titanium dioxide. The paper has a broad colour gamut, archival quality, and is accurate with its portrayal of colours. The versatility of Innova FibaPrint F-Type White Semi-Matte allows it to be used with both dye and ink pigments.
Some photographers were delivering four star ratings to the other Innova Semit-Matte papers but Innova FibaPrint F-Type White Semi-Matte stood a star above the rest and was described as a paper that is whipping up luxurious prints with great D-max.
The Paper isn’t Cheap
Like many other high-end digital papers the price isn’t cheap when it comes to buying Innova FibaPrint F-Type White Semi-Matte. But… if you believe the saying that ‘an image is only as good as the paper that its printed on’, then you might want to open the wallet to make an Innova investment.

Innova FibaPrint F-Type White Semi-Matte is OBA free which gives the paper a more toned down white appearance. Photographers who love the glistening of lightning white paper may find that Innova FibaPrint F-Type Brilliant white gloss better suits their needs. The lack of OBAs produces matte printing jobs that are quite impressive.
Satin is Better?
On the Yahoo circuit, reviewers were pretty silent about the White Semi-Matte but when asked their opinion on Innova F-Type Fibaprint Satin High White 300 gsm, people were ecstatic, excited, and highly recommended it. If you want to know where the Holy Grail of paper is then going from semi to satin will probably take you there… but Satin isn’t every photographer’s preference.
When compared to its rivals and competition, Innova claims to have greater gamut, and higher DMAX, and the fact it is acid-free. Innova FibaPrint F-Type White Semi-Matte also brags about the benefit of being produced with the Fourdrinier process. The Fourdrinier process makes sure that all the fibres flow the same way which increases the overall firmness and durability of the paper.
One of the gripes of many photographers who are releasing the darkroom age for the digital age are the inconsistencies between monitor and print colors. Innova FibaPrint F-Type White Semi-Matte offers crisp color that closely matches the monitor. This bonus along with good color saturation makes it a perfect paper for gallery photographs.
Harman Hi-Matte Finish Fiber Base
Harman Hi-Matte Finish Fiber Base has a wide tonal range, deep rich blacks, and like other papers on the market is fibre-based. Many digital papers are aiming to have that real photo fibre-based feel and Harman Hi-Matte finish has that. It has a sheen finish and is made similar to silver gelatin paper. Harman Hi-Matte Finish Fiber Base claims to be a “true” fibre based paper because of its premium quality and acid free microporous paper.
We all know that photographers have their pet-peeves when it comes to digital paper. One of the pet-peeves of a photographer is the curling that can take place on wet paper. Harman Hi- Matte Finish Fiber Base offers a new anti-curl technology that solves the long-standing pet peeve. The answer to the anti-curl dilemma was found in a silica treatment that allows the paper to dry flat. Another added bonus is that the drying takes place in an instant.
Before the Bartya craze even began, Harman knew that the Bartya chemical would revolutionize the way that people looked at digital photography (literally). With each print their is a coating of Bartya in the mix. The Bartya improves the entire tonal range in the print adding depth and detail where needed, and it gives the print an overall better look and feel. They were one of the first to inject the magical Bartya into their fine art Inkjet paper. Harman was after definition and detail and the Bartya layer provides that.
Aesthetics are important to photographers. Not only do they want to see how the image may reflect, draw back, and pop from the paper they are using, they understand the texture of a paper is just as important as how it looks. Harman’s texture is not abrasive like other matte textures. The paper has smooth pure finish and feels like high-quality paper should. The surface is smoother than some of the other papers it has on the market, but this baby-smooth surface comes at a price. The price is how delicate and fragile the paper is; which is just as much a con as it is a pro.
The Professional Side
There is nothing that shouts ‘professionalism’ louder then high-quality, archival paper. You can feel confident enough that Harman Hi- Matte Finish Fiber Base is not out of its league if it has the pleasure to be placed in a museum, art gallery, or library. The archival potential often equates to the professionalism a paper conveys, and if Harman were a professional it would probably be dressed in a suit. Harman technology has been using a heavier paper stock in an effort to recreate the look of traditional photographic prints.
Harman Hi-Matte Finish and its Glory
There is rarely any good information on the Harman Hi-Matte Finish Fiber Base paper and that is probably because the Harman Gloss Fiber Base has stolen all the glory. To be perfectly honest, Harman Gloss Fiber can not be blamed for stealing all of the limelight because Harman Warmtone Matte Finish deserves some of that credit as well.
While Harman Hi-Matte Finish Fiber Base may offer excellent archival qualities and the look and feel of darkroom paper, photographers want to get as close to the darkroom door as possible and the gloss allows them an extra step towards that door. Despite Gloss and Warmtone’s attempts to dilute the excellence of Harman it still should be said that Harman can hold its own when going against its rivals. Its a paper hat is simply hasn’t gotten the hype it deserves.

Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Satin
If you are looking for a paper with a satiny sheen then Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Satin can provide that. The paper is injected with an innovative satin-coating that gives black-and-white photography a unique perspective. One of the bragging rights of the Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Satin is the excellence that it produces with monochrome images.
Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Satin has good color and density and the satin finish comes in handy with lending depth to the photographer’s images. It is one of the best papers to bridge the gap between the attributes of matte and glossy paper. The Photo Rag Satin bridges that gap by using a matte black ink which marries perfectly with its satin-coating.
Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Satin has the same eggshell texture of the basic Photo Rag, so it has some of the same surface characteristics of other papers in the Hahnemuhle line. There are also some visible cotton fibers. The paper, with its slightly textured water-color feel has a nice weight to it and is approximately 310 gsm.
Black and white photographs that are produced on the satin paper appear to be etched in steel, and this makes the texture of Hahnemuhle Photo Rag 380 and Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Pearl seem dull by comparison. Of course, Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Satin can’t escape the comparisons of it’s sister Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Pearl. The two papers are almost identical with the exception of Photo Rag Satin being a little thinner, and a little more matte. The ‘interesting’ coating on Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Satin is what distinguishes it from other papers.
Although the Photo Rag Satin takes on a lustrous satin look, it maintains a matte finish on the perimeters. It is the perfect paper for those who want a mild surface variation and because of its slight luster finish, satin is a favorite for those who produce dark prints.
Complaints About Lighting
Some photographers feel that Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Satin doesn’t have the versatility to look good under any light. Phenomenal prints under any light is a must for an artist who showcases their work at various venues. Under certain lights the Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Satin may look amazing, but under other lights it may look like a wreck. Another complaint was that the papers texture seem to interfere with the actual print.

If the price seems a bit steep then just remember that Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Satin has a higher contrast then some of its competitors (Epson). It also helps to remember that like all Hahnemuhle Papers, the age resistant properties are in full effect. This comes in handy for those dreamy photographers that would like to see their work in the Louvre in the future.
The Final Assessment
Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Satin has great D-MAX and gamut. The images the paper produces are sharp and it works fine with both pigment and dye inks. Whether the paper has a softer look is in the high of the beholder, but one thing is certain… the metallic sheen is wonderfully unique. The Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Pearl users who wanted to try a distinct and unusual paper but wanted to avoid the “sparkle” of the pearl found themselves enamored with Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Satin. Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Satin is a genuine artist’s paper.
Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Pearl is named for its distinctive pearl-coating. It has a bright, white fiber-base that meets the Hahnemuhle standards and is lignin-free. Like almost everything in the Hahnemuhle line, the paper is age-resistant due to the use of cotton linters. This should please the photographer who has created photos with the intentions of seeing them passed down from generation to generation. Matter of fact, Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Pearl satisfies the highest conservational standards.
Not only will Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Pearl last a while but it is also durable. Rag paper is made out of cotton fibers instead of wood fibers. Because cotton fibers are longer they make a more secure and durable paper.
The emulation of silver halid print is a trend in photography and the Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Pearl keeps up with that trend wonderfully. How it Feels
When you touch Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Pearl it feels like a smooth egg shell. If you can imagine touching an egg with a luster finish then you have a good idea of the texture of Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Pearl. The paper itself has a nice feel and weight and a grammage of 320 gsm. Unlike other papers with unique-coatings the Photo Rag Pearl has a uniform surface texture. Photographers who were complaining about surface defects with other papers are quite delighted to find their images are coming out without any such defects.
Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Pearl will remind you of a natural white baryta-paper. One of the distinguishing marks of the paper is it’s ideal structure for capturing grey tones and warm colours.
The Fourth Dimension
The designers of the paper found their bragging rights in Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Pearl with what they call the ’4th dimension’. Images are offered a fourth dimension with the real cotton rag paper. And despite the papers slightly textured finish, there is very little reflection at most angles.
The Dust Magnet
Many photographers place their work under glass but with Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Pearl the pieces are gorgeous enough to stand alone. But If you leave your image alone it could end up attracting particles of dust from the ends of the earth. Images printed on Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Pearl are preserved best when protected otherwise you could be facing a dust-magnet.

Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Baryta produces luminous images as well high top-quality black and white printing and the final results of the images are highly saturated and pop out at the viewer. Before the image the photographer will want to touch and feel the paper, after the image is applied to the paper the photographer will emotionally feel as if he or she wants to touch the image. The three-dimensional depth causes the images to come alive.
The producers of Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Baryta wanted to make the paper as similar to a darkroom print as possible and they succeeded in that endeavor. Those who naturally assume that the old way is best and darkroom prints are better than inkjet will find that Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Baryta dispels that notion.
Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Baryta feels like a mixture of soft cotton paper and traditional baryta board that contains barium sulfate. Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Baryta is not super smooth, the paper has some texture to it which is probably why Hahnemuhle introduced Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Ultra Smooth at the same time the Baryta was introduced. While some photographers prefer silky smooth surfaces, many are falling in love with the rich texture the Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Baryta paper provides. The surface of the paper has a very fine texture with a beautiful gloss surface and comes in 315 gsm.
There were some photographers who felt that Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Baryta was too reflective for the prints. The reflection of paper can be altered based on the texture and gloss, and the photographers who felt that the Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Baryta paper has the perfect combination to make images look good from any angle are far greater than the ones who disagree.
Another complaint was from one lone photographer who claimed the black-and-white photographer took on a green hue when placed in the daylight. Another photographer claimed that his monochrome pictures were disappointing. No other strange occurrences have been documented. Overall, the complaints seem rather diminutive in light of the fact that photographers are claiming this may very well be the best paper out there. Whether or not Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Baryta is THE best paper in the market is an arguable point. However the proclamation that Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Baryta is ONE of the best papers in the market is indeed a fact.
